The man who allegedly attacked an off-duty cop with an 11-inch meat cleaver before getting shot in midtown Manhattan yesterday was apparently upset about a parking boot placed on his car, setting off a rush-hour panic. The suspect, Akram Joudeh, 32, was shot by police officers, and at a subsequent press conference Police Commissioner Bill Bratton explained, "You have a character running down the street with a meat cleaver. The officer fired sufficient rounds to stop the attack." The NYPD said that around 5 p.m., two uniformed Midtown South officers were responding to a possible crime at West 31st Street and Broadway. He was doing it for about an hour. He was using a hammer.

The gunshots rang out about a block from Macy’s department store just as rush hour was getting underway Thursday. The man with the knife was shot at least twice and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, police said. The detective, who had been heading home in street clothes when he intervened in the chase, was being treated at the hospital for a six-inch gash from his temple to his jaw. An off-duty police detective tried to tackle the man, who lashed out with the knife, said the department's top chief, James O'Neill.

A bystander, Jonathan Schneier, said when he left work to get coffee he saw a balding man holding a cleaver, surrounded by a small group of officers yelling at him to drop the knife.

One of those was an August 27 booking for carrying knives near a synagogue, NBC reported. And according to the NY Post, in 2013 Joudeh was arrested for criminal mischief after smashing a car up with a wooden fence post.

When police officers approached Joudeh -- around 5 p.m. -- he pulled out the meat cleaver and ran away. The officers chased Joudeh, and shot him with a Taser, but that did nothing to immobilize him. They shouted at him to drop the meat cleaver.

The man, Akram Joudeh, 32, was critically injured and taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, the police said. The off-duty detective, identified by the police as Brian O’Donnell, was in serious condition. Joudeh was trying to remove the device, Police Commissioner William J. Joudeh pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of petit larceny and was sentenced to 90 days, according to public records. He pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle and was fined, but served no time.
