'Kevin Can Wait' premiere: The decision to kill off Erinn Hayes' character gets even weirder

How did Erinn Hayes's character, Donna, die on "Kevin Can Wait"? Well, we have no idea. It was never addressed. - From chicagotribune.com

A bit awkward, considering that the first season finale ended as the whole family gathered around on a couch together, declaring they could get through anything. It's something that will have taken place in the past." Indeed, the show opened as Kevin scrambled to get his younger kids ready for school. While the series will soon find Kevin working with Vanessa once again (and setting up some will-they-won't-they sparks!), in this episode, Vanessa was there simply to help him get his daughter's British boyfriend a green card. and that was Hayes's goodbye. Granted, the show isn't an in-depth drama, and Hayes was on for only one season.

‘Kevin Can Wait’ awkwardly handles the death of major character

Leah Remini has returned to Kevin Can Wait, but this time as a permanent fixture. After the success of her guest starring episodes last season the popular show made the shocking decision to kill off the character of Donna and have Remini as the new female lead. Although it was revealed earlier this year that the character of Donna would be killed off, the casual mentioning of her death in the season premiere was still a bit of a shock. As Kevin sorted through the mail he came across a postcard for Donna that said “Haven’t seen you. We miss you” which leads to his daughter saying “I will call them right now. It's been over a year since she died. They shouldn't still be sending this.” To which Kevin responds, “Thank you. Oh, but don't throw that out. On the bottom there's a coupon for a Kung Fu lesson” Fans of Kevin Can Wait took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter, with one person saying “You mean to tell me they only spent 5 seconds on Donna's death and we still don't know how she died?” https://twitter.com/haroldb21/status/912483233308270593?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.buzzfeed.com%2Fjarettwieselman%2Fhow-kevin-can-wait-handled-donnas-death As the season continues maybe more information will come to light on just how Donna kicked the bucket but for now the show must go on. - From https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/kevin-wait-kills-off-mom-055406534.html

'Kevin Can Wait': Handling of Erinn Hayes' character's death angers viewers

Kevin Can Wait returned with Season 2 Monday night, airing its first episode since announcing Erinn Hayes' surprising exit. - From Fox News

A rep for CBS told Fox News at the time that the decision to get rid of Hayes was the result of "the show going in a different creative direction." Following the announcement of Hayes' departure, the network revealed Leah Remini would be bumped up to a series regular on the sitcom. "The goal was to give Kevin’s character a real drive and a real predicament [involving] how a family comes back together [after tragedy]," executive producer and showrunner Rob Long told TVLine last month. "Also, out of respect for the character of Donna -- and certainly the way that Erinn Hayes portrayed her -- it seemed like the only right and fair way to treat her character." However, fans were not happy with the way "Kevin Can Wait" handled writing Donna off the sitcom. Erinn Hayes was hilarious. #KevinCanWait just casually mentions his wife “died over a year ago”.

Kevin Can Wait Fans Are Not Happy With How the Show Killed Off Erinn Hayes' Character

#Justice4Donna - From TVGuide.com

On Monday's season premiere of Kevin Can Wait, the show revealed its new, Erinn Hayes-less incarnation. In the offseason, Hayes, who played Kevin Gable's (Kevin James) wife Donna in Season 1, was let go to make room for the full-time return of Leah Remini, who played Kevin's wife on The King of Queens and guest-starred on Kevin Can Wait's first season. How Donna died was not explained in the Season 2 premiere and probably will never be, especially as the show moves on. Even in the premiere, her death was glossed over. CBS should kill off everyone else on Kevin Can Wait and bring back the entire cast of The King of Queens.

'Kevin Can Wait' Had the Most Awkward Sitcom Death of All Time

Watch how they ungracefully killed off Erinn Hayes for Leah Remini. - From Esquire

Kevin Can Wait is a show about the Gables, a nice-enough Long Island family that mostly hangs out at home, around the neighborhood, or an Italian restaurant. There's a dad Kevin Gable, a retired cop who is allegedly neither Doug Heffernan from The King of Queens nor Paul Blart from Paul Blart: Mall Cop. There's a mom, Donna, played by Erinn Hayes, who is way out of Kevin's league and works overtime to support her husband's boredom. As a replacement, they brought in Leah Remini, the same actress who played James's wife on The King of Queens, essentially creating a mildly fucked-up reboot a decade later. Anyway, ahead of the Season Two premiere, Executive Producer Rob Long promised that the death would be handled with the utmost class: “Out of respect for the character of Donna—and certainly the way that Erinn Hayes portrayed her—it seemed like the only right and fair way to treat her character.” #KevinCanWait killed off Kevin's wife tonight & spent less than one minute talking about her death in the whole ep https://t.co/GxvcdO0gnC pic.twitter.com/CexQHJEQ23 So how'd they handle this very delicate transition in last night's Season Two premiere?

Kevin Can Wait Barely Acknowledges Death of Kevin's Wife Donna in Season Premiere

The biggest news in the history of Kevin Can Wait (not saying much), which broke this summer, is that Erinn Hayes’s character Donna (the wife of Kevin James’s Kevin) was being killed off so that the show could focus on Kevin’s life as a single father...and also reunite him with Leah Remini, thus giving viewers King of Queens 2.0. - From Jezebel

The show’s EP Rob Long promised this was being done “out of respect” for Donna, who is a fictional character, and during the opening moments of last night’s Season 2 premiere, we got to see the extent of that respect: An exchange lasting less than 20 seconds in which the series’s minor time jump was noted (“It’s been over a year since she died,” noted Kevin’s daughter Kendra, played by Taylor Spreitler). The death came up as a topic of conversation because Donna’s gym had sent her a postcard: “Haven’t seen you. The whole thing reminds me of the ‘80s sitcom Valerie, which returned for its third season without its titular character (Valerie Hogan, who played her, left the show after Season 2 after a salary dispute). The acknowledgement of her death in the show’s first segment was similarly brief: At least they gave Valerie a cause of death (automobile accident).

Kevin Can Wait Viewers Were Not Happy About How Donna's Death Was Handled

When Kevin Can Wait returned for its Season 2 premiere, it didn't make the smoothest moves when explaining Donna's absence. - From CINEMABLEND

And had Donna's inexplicable death been handled respectfully, it would have been one thing, but viewers went berserk after the character's demise only earned a throwaway gag. (Though there was talk that it would be handled "with dignity.") Well, in "Civil Ceremony," viewers got to learn that Donna died "over a year ago," without any further details. And then, after Donna's gym sent a postcard to the Gable household, daughter Kendra said she would call someone about it, to which Kevin advised her against throwing the postcard away, because there was a coupon for kung-fu lesson on it. According to previous reprots, the family is also supposed to actually be coping with the death itself in Season 2, which wasn't at all the case in the episode. And then, on the opposite side of the previous sentiment, one person predicted in a most amusing tweet that Kevin Can Wait would continue its original character purging to bring in more King of Queens actors.

‘Kevin Can Wait’ killed off its wife character with no explanation — and fans are really disappointed about how it was handled

Fans knew the wife, played by Erinn Hayes, was to be killed off, but the second season premiere of the CBS sitcom didn't explain how her character died. - From Business Insider

Leah Remini, James' former "King of Queens" costar and guest on the first season of "Kevin Can Wait," would take her spot as a series regular. #KevinCanWait "She died over a year ago." Lazy writing. "She died over a year ago" That was lame af. The opening of the show featured Kevin getting his kids ready for school when he opens a postcard addressed to his dead wife. The show could explain more as the season continues, but for now, it wasn't enough for many fans.

Wow, So That’s How Kevin Can Wait Killed Kevin’s Wife

Though the show promised to write actress Erinn Hayes a "respectful" exit—after firing her—its treatment was rather brusque in the Season 2 premiere. - From HWD

When news first broke that actress Erinn Hayes would be written off the CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait—and effectively be replaced by Leah Remini, Kevin James’s old King of Queens costar—some questions naturally arose. We already knew that Hayes’s character, Donna, would be killed off; we just didn’t know how she would die—or, perhaps even more crucially, how the series would handle her conspicuously sudden absence. And as it turned out, the show handled Donna’s demise with exactly as much subtlety and delicacy as one would expect from a Kevin James show. Well, perhaps this won’t be the end of her story after all; when news of Donna’s imminent death first broke, CBS President Kelly Kahl promised that the reveal would “be treated with dignity and respect, and the show will move forward.” Maybe that means we’ll hear more about this as the season progresses, and Kevin processes his grief. Here's How Kevin Can Wait Handled Erinn Hayes' Character's Death

They didn't make a big deal out of it. They made a really small deal. - From TVGuide.com

Between Season 1 and Season 2, the creative team of Kevin Can Wait decided to do a soft reboot and replace female lead Erinn Hayes with star Kevin James' King of Queens wife Leah Remini. It was a surprising choice, and it got even weirder when the producers revealed that Hayes' character would be killed off, an inappropriately dark turn for the light family comedy. Before the season, showrunners Rock Reuben and Rob Long told TV Guide that the show was going to pick up about a year later with the characters past the heaviest part of their grief. In the first scene, Kevin was making the kids' lunches, which indicated something was amiss. Kendra and Chale (Ryan Cartwright) had to get married or else Chale would be deported.

LOS ANGELES—Asserting that he would never venture into the world of prestige film and television, actor Kevin James announced Monday that he is not considering a late-career shift towards more dramatic roles. “I can confirm that I am in no way planning a pivot toward taking on more weighty, serious roles,” said James, who also confirmed he has not spent a moment of free time filming a passion project that would explore darker, more personal themes. “You can expect me to continue making slapstick comedies where I get mad at my wife for losing the remote and occasionally wipe out on a Segway. I have no intention of playing a troubled genius or a controversial historical figure or anything at all that speaks to something deeper about the human condition.” James went on to say, however, he would reconsider if given the opportunity to collaborate with director Lars von Trier.

Early this past summer, lovers of mediocre sitcoms learned that Erinn Hayes, the talented actress who played Kevin James' wife Donna on CBS' Kevin Can Wait, was not returning to the show. Turns out that the multi-episode guest spot that his former costar (and anti-Scientology activist) Leah Remini did at the end of the first season reminded James of the chemistry they shared—and it was quickly curtains for Hayes. But how would the show deal with the removal of one of the two main characters, wife to the lead and mother of three children (or four if you count "Chale")? In June, CBS president Kelly Kahl had promised, “It will be treated with dignity and respect, something that will have taken place in the past.” Yeah, pretty heartless, no? And we're not the only ones; here are some angry tweeters who seem to agree.

Is Kevin Durant using this private Instagram account to argue with kids?

Forget Kevin Durant’s Twitter, the real drama is happening on Instagram. - From SBNation.com

The internet is in a tizzy over the idea that Kevin Durant uses fake accounts to defend himself on Twitter, but that story is nothing compared to his private Instagram account that was unearthed in the wake of the Twitter conspiracy. It begins with this photo, posted by KD’s brother, who tagged Durant with the account “quiresultan.” The account is private, but it’s followed by numerous NBA players, Durant’s stylist and Big Sean — well-known friend of Durant. This is true, though people don’t usually use those private accounts to argue with fans about their real life, just as Durant has been accused of doing on Twitter. To cap it off, shortly after news spread that @quiresultan was Durant’s private account he deleted the profile picture and changed the account’s name. The original photo by Durant’s brother is still tagging @quiresultan, but Instagram shows that account as deactivated.

Why LeBron James and Kevin Durant Speaking Out Against Trump Matters

In a matter of hours, the question had become irrelevant. Soon after announcing the return, the Wizards agreed to host D.C.-area police and firefighters who were a part of the relief efforts at the Pentagon for an intrasquad scrimmage. Leah Remini Trains The Big Guns On Scientology In Latest Episode

The man who designed the security system at the main center for Scientology on the West says it eventually was used to keep people from escaping. - From The Federalist

The first season of Leah Remini and Mike Rinder’s A&E series exposing the Church of Scientology had one aim: to explain the evils of the organization, which in no way is actually a church. Where once speaking out against Scientology could spell the end of a Hollywood career, the times, they are a-changin’, as most clearly evidenced by the fact that the series just won an Emmy. Aaron Smith-Levin, one of the most powerful critics of Scientology (and a contributor to the A&E series) pushed back against my assertions, making a critical point that the organization does indeed have culpability in the suicides of its members if Scientology authorities prohibited them from seeking professional help. The most powerful portion of the episode, and most likely to be of interest to law enforcement, was the testimony of Gary “Jackson” Morehead, who designed the security system at the main center for Scientology on the West Coast, the Gold Base. With both the House and the Senate Republican-controlled, inquiries into Scientology’s policy of coerced abortions should also begin given how many individuals have described its existence both on and off camera on the A&E special.

Jada Pinkett Smith denied she was a Scientologist after Leah Remini claimed the actress had been practicing the religion. (Reuters) Jada Pinkett Smith shut down rumors she was a Scientologist on Tuesday after Leah Remini claimed the actress has been practicing the religion for “a long time.” Smith, 46, opened up about her religious practices in a series of tweets, admitting she had studied Dianetics, which details the practices and beliefs of Scientology, but doesn’t call herself a Scientologist. I have studied Dianetics, and appreciate the merits of Study Tech… but I am not a Scientologist. Remini sparked the Scientology rumors when she detailed Tom Cruise and the Smiths playing adult-hide-and-seek in her book “Troublemaker.” The actress then told The Daily Beast on Saturday she knew Smith was a Scientologist. Republicans fail again to kill off Obamacare in U.S. Senate

U.S. Republicans on Tuesday fell short yet again in their seven-year drive to repeal Obamacare, in a bitter defeat that raises more questions about their ability to enact President Donald Trump's agenda. - From U.S.

After falling short in July, Senate Republicans tried again this month with a bill that would gives states greater control over the hundreds of billions of dollars that the federal government spends annually on health care. The Republican president said later he still had not given up hope that the law would eventually be repealed. John Thune, a member of the Republican leadership in the Senate, said the party would likely not try to undo Obamacare again until it was clear there were enough votes for it. He said the party would now focus on overhauling the U.S. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said the number of people with health insurance covering high-cost medical events would be slashed by millions if the latest Republican bill had it become law.

Scientists in South Africa are investigating the case of a nine-year-old child who was seemingly cured of HIV after receiving antiretroviral therapy. At the end of 2015, 36.7 million people around the world were living with HIV/AIDS, so clearly a lot more work needs to be done. 'Dead as a door nail': Republicans again fail to kill off Obamacare

Facing certain defeat, Republican leaders decide not to even hold a vote on the latest attempt to repeal the Obama healthcare law. - From ABC News

The decision marked the latest stinging rejection on the issue for President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In July, the Republican-controlled Senate rejected three similar GOP measures, a failure that infuriated conservatives and prompted Mr Trump to spend much of his summer tweeting insults at Senator McConnell and other Republicans for falling short. The retreat left the GOP's next steps on healthcare unclear, especially with a President who in recent weeks has reached out to congressional Democratic leaders on high-agenda items like the budget and immigration. The abandoned bill would have transformed much of Obamacare's spending into $US1.2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) worth of grants through to 2026 that states could spend on health programs with few constraints. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said "millions" of Americans would have lost coverage under the bill, and projected it would impose $1 trillion ($1.3 trillion) in Medicaid cuts through 2026.

Republicans fail again to kill off Obamacare in Senate

Opinion | The Republican Health Care Zombie Is Back

After spending much of this year trying to kill the Affordable Care Act, House and Senate leaders try again with a worse plan. - From https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/opinion/editorials/republican-healthcare-graham-cassidy.html

Like a bad sequel to a terrible movie, a proposal whose main architects are Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina would in many ways be worse than bills that came before. It would punish states like California and New York that have done the most to increase access to health care and set in motion cuts to Medicaid, the federal-state program that provides insurance to nearly 70 million people, many of whom are disabled and elderly. It would eliminate the mandate that even healthy people buy health insurance, end the subsidies that help people purchase coverage and stop the expansion of Medicaid. The block grants would disappear entirely in 2027, and it is by no means certain, given the pitched partisan battles over health care in recent years, that Congress would be inclined to reauthorize them. Under current law, federal spending increases automatically to keep up with the rise in medical costs; a per-capita cap would leave governors, who are ultimately in charge of administering Medicaid, in the unenviable position of denying care to poor and older Americans.

Old iPhone apps to be killed off by Apple iOS 11

A move to 64-bit is designed to allow iPhones and iPads to run programs more efficiently - but it will render older apps obsolete. - From Sky News

A move to 64-bit is designed to allow iPhones and iPads to run programs more efficiently - but it will render older apps obsolete. 21:37, UK, Tuesday 19 September 2017 Apple's new mobile operating system will drop support for older apps as the technology moves to using faster processors. Alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple is beginning to roll out the newest version of its operating system, iOS 11, on Tuesday. But iOS 11 has the potential to leave iPhone and iPad users unable to access their favourite apps if they are old and no longer supported by developers. The new operating system is going to be restricted to running apps written in 64-bit code, meaning many older apps written in 32-bit code will stop working for users after they update their systems.

New health-care plan stumbles under opposition from governors

A bipartisan group of 10 executives warned against the Graham-Cassidy bill Tuesday. - From Washington Post

The measure marks the last gasp of Republican attempts to dramatically gut Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which has added millions of people to the ranks of the insured through a combination of federally subsidized marketplaces and state-level expansions of Medicaid, leading to record lows in the number of those without health insurance. Everybody knows that the opportunity expires at the end of the month,” said McConnell, referring to the limited window Republicans have to take advantage of a procedural tactic to pass a broad health-care bill without any Democratic support. The fact that the bill also would restrict states’ abilities to tax health-care providers to fund their Medicaid programs posed a problem for several governors, as well. In a sign of how alarmed state officials are about the prospect of funding cuts, Louisiana’s health secretary sent a letter to Cassidy on Monday saying that their state could see disproportionate cuts with significant impacts on people with preexisting or complex and costly conditions. Given the complex nature of the Graham-Cassidy proposal, it is difficult for state officials and health-care analysts to predict exactly how much money a given state would gain or lose if the legislation were enacted.
