The company, a subsidiary of Daimler North American Corp., has already begun replacing the stubby blue-and-white two-seaters in Austin with Mercedes-Benz CLA sedans and GLA sport utility vehicles, which can seat four or even five people.
The company in January had announced that it was bringing some Mercedes-Benz cars to Austin, but it had not sounded a death knell for the smaller cars.
The GLA and CLA both have an EPA fuel efficiency of about 23 miles per gallon, based on using premium gas and doing city-only driving.
The Smart Fortwo coupe gets 33 miles per gallon in the city.
The service, then and now, includes free parking at designated car2go spaces as well as any legal metered or unmetered space within a designated central Austin service area.
