But overall, the Philadelphia tax doesn't seem to be hurting Pepsico too much: "Pepsi’s beverage sales are down 40% in the city and up only 10-15% outside the city." Since 1.6 million people live in Philadelphia, and more than 4.6 million in the suburbs, if you calculate, say, one case or bottle per resident before the tax, that means sales are down about 640,000 units in the city -- and up about 675,000 units in the suburb.
Even though it doesn't seem to be hurting regionally, by that count, Pepsi is still threatening to "eliminate 80-100 positions in Philadelphia over the next few months" if the tax isn't reversed, and promising "to bring people back to work" if the city caves in.
